Hangar Flight Museum in Calgary focuses on flight history in Western Canada. There are lots of military and commercial planes. You can even explore some of them from the inside during special events.

Hangar Flight Museum is great for spending an afternoon with your kids or airplane enthusiasts.

We visited during the Father’s Day weekend event, β€˜Wings and Wheels’. Apart from the many planes, the museum featured several shiny veteran cars. The hangar had several planes with open doors where visitors could sit in a pilot seats. It was a highlight for us.

The second building has a gift shop and many smaller planes on the ground and hanging above. As part of the special event, they also had a pilot simulator. You could ask for a specific city you’d like to fly overhead.

The main attraction of the day was flying in a helicopter above Calgary. I suggest going in line when they open up if you’d like to go.

Craft station and a mini version of a helicopter simulator were also favourites among kids. We spent in the Hangar Flight Museum about two hours. It was a great family-friendly event that everyone enjoyed.

Tips about visiting Hangar Flight Museum in Calgary

  • Wear closed-toe shoes; otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to go inside the planes
  • If you have young toddlers, keep an eye on them. Kids are curious and want to touch everything, and they don’t like anyone touching the planes (as you see our son in the picture below)
  • While the hangar is just a huge tent, and it gets cold in winter, the other building is heated
  • The gift shop has lots of cool things featuring planes, games, books, and more
  • There’s no food available, so bring plenty of snacks for kids (and yourself)
  • The most important question that everyone has: When can you see the inside of the planes? Open airplanes are available from Father’s Day in June until Labour Day daily, after that during weekends in September, and on National Aviation Day in February (see their events page). On regular days, some aircrafts have stairs you can climb to look inside.
