If trekking in Patagonia thought me anything about overnighting in the mountains, itβs that your sleeping bag is the most important item of your camping gear. Because no matter how the day turns out and what the weather will be, you can always invite your sweet dreams by snuggling in your comfy warm sleeping bag.
But what about camping with kids?
What camping gear do you really need?
Since we often camp in the Canadian Rockies, itβs not as easy as putting a blanket over. And because temperatures often hover around 5C at night, you really do need warm sleeping gear, no matter how old you are.
So, I went on a hunt. For a warm sleeping bag for my toddler son. And let me tell you, thereβs not much on the market.
Weβve tried a couple of sleep sacks with arms, but the outer fabric was cotton. When the temperatures drop at night, itβs more cooling than warming. Not an ideal situation, to say the least.
I ended up checking my sonβs hands throughout the night wondering if heβs cold or not and then covering him with the blanket I used on top of my sleeping bag. Not an ideal situation either.
If you never camped with a baby or toddler before, let me tell you β you need a good nightβs sleep. Parenting in a campground requires much more energy than at home.
Crappy sleep of anyone, including you, makes the next day much harder.
To make everyone feel as comfy as possible on our camping trip, I decided to try the widely celebrated Morrison Outdoors sleeping bag for toddlers.
So, letβs review the sleeping bag and answer the question: is it worth it?

Quick summary of Morrison Outdoors sleeping bags
They offer sleeping bags for kids from 6 months to 5 years and for temperatures ranging from -6Β°C to 15Β°C. That wide range covers you for a very long camping season.

Big Mo 20Β° | 18-36 months | -6Β°C to 15Β°C (20Β°-40Β°F) | 97 cm (38in) | Down | 343 CAD ($250) |

Mighty Mo 20Β° | 3-5 years | -6Β°C to 15Β°C (20Β°-40Β°F) | 116cm (46in) | Down | 381 CAD ($278) |
Mighty Mo 40Β° | 3-5 years | 4Β°C to 15Β°C (40Β°-60Β°F) | 116cm (46in) | Synthetic | 220 CAD ($160) |
For my 18 month old son, I chose Big Mo 20Β° with down insulation. Since we got snowed on last summer in the Rockies, Iβd rather for him to be too warm than cold.
As a mom, these are the features I appreciate the most
Safe sleep
Morrison Outdoors emphasizes that their sleeping bags are safe for babies and toddlers. When you order the correct size, of course.
They have a soft and snug neckline that prevents the sleeping bag to slip over babyβs head.
And since theyβre made of breathable materials, thereβs no risk of overheating.
In our case, it was actually a bit too warm at night for the down insulated sleeping bag, so I just unzipped a tiny bit from the bottom to let some air in. The two-way zipper is also great for, sometimes necessary, night diaper changes.
Fold over hands
I find this to be a very important feature for two reasons:
- With the hands out, my son can still turn pages when we read at bedtime, find his paci at night, and hold his favourite plushie.
- If itβs warm at night, he can have his hands out to cool off but if itβs freezing, I can hide his hands to provide even more warmth.
Sizing
Iβm glad Morrison Outdoors adapted their sizing for babies and little kids growing fast.
Since itβs important that the neckline fits perfectly, thereβs no risk of the sleeping bag slipping over babyβs head. Thatβs why choosing the correct size is so important.
My son is 18 months old, and I chose a sleeping bag 18-36 months. The neckline fits him great, but thereβs still plenty of room to grow into the sleeping bag. The sleeves are too long for him right now, but I can easily fold them over. And due to the prices of the sleeping bags, Iβm happy he can use it for two seasons, and not just one.
The big question β is Morrison Outdoors sleeping bag worth it?
In my opinion, the answer is a clear yes. For our everchanging mountain climate, itβs a perfect piece of camping gear.
I can now sleep sweet and soundly knowing that my toddler is cozy warm in his sleeping bag. He actually has the best sleeping bag in the family, and only wears merino onesie underneath while the rest of us wear several layers.
While the price tag might seem off putting, Morrison Outdoors sleeping bags have a great resell value, and Iβve seen them pop up on Facebook Marketplace for 70% the original price and they were gone fast.
Overall, itβs a great investment since you can use it for two camping seasons. Good nightβs sleep is essential, especially while camping.
