San Cristobal de las Casas is a very colorful and pleasant town in the Chiapas state of Mexico. We spent there a whole week – walking in town, in the forest and mountain biking.
It is situated in Chiapas mountains 2200 meters high above the sea level, so there is a comfortable temperature of 24C (we visited in August).
Chiapas used to be a part of Guatemala, in both of these places live Mayan people. They still dress in traditional dresses. We had the best view of town from the cathedral up the stairs. Santo Domingo church is on the main plaza, where all the street vendors offer local handicrafts. These two monuments are connected with a pedestrian zone filled with bars and restaurants.

San Cristobal de las Casas is not only great for mountain lovers – for hiking and mountain biking, but also for anyone interested in yoga, healthy eating (many vegan & vegetarian restaurants) or taking Spanish lessons. There is a ton of options for everyone.

Lovely photos in your photo essay!
Beautiful photos. I love visiting Mexico, but I haven’t been to San Cristobal yet. Looks lovely though.
Your photos are amazing! I love all the colourful buildings and outfits worn by the locals. I am planning my trip to San Cristobal for later this year and can’t wait to explore this charming-looking city. Thanks for sharing your photos, they were quite inspiring!
Thanks Brittany, I’m glad you like my photos. When you visit San Cristobal, be prepared to see a lot of begging children (sometimes selling something), please do not promote it. There are many better ways to help the community, you’ll see fliers everywhere.
Very colourful! I’ll be heading there in a few weeks and would also like to do some mountain biking.
